I am a terrible reviewer. You know, the one whos texts are not just constantly dry, lifeless and boring, but also late. Well, this time I managed to do even worse: more than two weeks late, with another reviewer already being done (good job, Manuela!)

That being said, I don’t remember much of that evening, except that many people seemed curious about the movie. Heck, it’s got a fabuous Emma Stone in it!

The movie is based on real events and tells a story of a bad-ass ex-boxer and now gangster, Mickey Cohen, played by no one else but Sean Penn himself. And my god, he was unbelievable! His gesticulation, mime, the manner of speaking, everything was just screaming: “I’m an absolutely evil motherfucker and don’t you dare to ever mess with me!”

And on the right side of the ring, wearing rightful pants is sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) – the most fair cop in the town, whose only purpuse in life, it seems, is fighting bad guys and upsetting his pregnant wife.

On the good side also stands our beloved driver, Ryan Gosling, playing sgt. Jerry Wooters. Of course, it took some convincing (in a form of a dead kido) to make up his mind, but now he’s hungry for vengeance … and Emma Stone as well.

What’s worht mentioning is the brilliang job Ruben Fleischer did picturing Los Angeles of the 50s: shiny old cars, fancy costumes, lovely interior details, sweet jazz and a good old Thompson machine gun – this all together creates a truly marvellous gangster experience.

Anyway, taking into consideration the (somewhat) true nature of the plot, (mostly) good acting and an (incredibly) stylish atmosphere of the movie, I give it a solid 8 and a “Recommended” stamp.

Oh man, some of us have been waiting for this movie for almost a year now, I believe. Right after I got to know that an awesome mock trailer to a fake movie is going to be all real, I was sold. Then my expectations sky rocketed even more after the first official trailer. Just think about it: having Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey together with Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan in one movie, shooting and chopping each other in any possible and impossible way was an indication of something epic. Almost as The Expandables, but better :)

I need to give special credit to Robert Rodriguez here for choosing Danny Trejo to play the main role. He has that unmistakeable face that appears to have years and years of horrible experiences carved onto it. A face that is mean and somewhat charming at the same time.

He is a Mexican Federale, whose name is Machete, because that’s his weapon of choice. He tries to be a good cop, but loses his family, then gets set up and nearly dies. That’s when Machete gets really pissed off and puts his revenge on every single bad guy on his way in a truly spectacular way. Must also say that all violent killing scenes throughout the movie are nicely spiced up by Rodriguez’s wicked sense of humor. Up to the point, when you realize just how much over the top that thing you just saw was, but simply can’t stop laughing…

To name just a few: “Machete don’t text”, “You fucked with the wrong mexican” and “This cucaracha has got AK-47s and he’s laying waste to all that gets in his f**king path.”

All in all, Machete is the kind of film that if viewed in the right environment and with the right group of friends, will provide a great entertainment for the evening. Highly recommend!
