The Men Who Stare at Goats

The Men Who Stare at Goats

Rating: 7.7/10 (3 votes cast)

This was it, this was the big one. This was my 100th SMEx event in a row. Coincidentally it also turned out to be SMEx C. The turn out was small as people weren’t quick enough to snap up a ticket before the movie was sold out. This was the third movie of the film festival to have been sold out, mainly due to the fact this movie had a strong cast and was only shown once! For all of you who missed out I’m sure it will appear at the regular cinema soon enough.

First off before we get to the movie, thanks to everyone who has made SMEx such fun over the last 100 events and two and a bit years, lets keep the good times rolling and hope we can last another 100.

Now to the movie. Let’s start with the cast, George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. This cast alone makes you think the movie has to be good, then there is the weird premise, psychic soldiers that can kill a goat just be staring at it.

So what was I expected from this movie? To be honest I had no idea, I was just hoping that it was going to be something strange and fun, and that’s exactly what I got. It turned out the main story of the movie followed Ewan McGregor on his trek to make a name for himself as his tried to find out all he could about the secret army battalion of psychic soldiers.

A great movie to round out SMEx C.

Happy 1st Birthday SMEx!!!

Today is SMEx’s first birthday. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year already. Starting one year ago today with  Rush Hour 3 and ending the first year with Get Smart, our 41st event, last Sunday.

One of the big things that happened this year was to move to our new home here on SMEx.me. We haven’t finished bringing all of our old movie reviews to the new site here, but hopefully that task will be completed soon.

Best movies seen include Get Smart, The Dark Knight and Shoot ‘em up, and the worst being X-Files by a long way. I myself have never seen so many movies in such a short period of time, but it’s been fun seeing them with a large group of friends.

New for SMEx’s second big year we are going to introduce ratings to the movies. We encorage everyone, member and non-members to vote so we can see what everyone’s favorite movie is. We’ll be experimenting with the system for a few weeks before we get it up and running properly.

Lastly, thanks to the board, and everyone who has come to SMEx and made the last year so much fun, hope you all continue to enjoy the movies :)

The President
