This weeks SMEX was one for the kids, or at least for the young at heart. We met up OUTSIDE Park Lounge for some pre-movie philosophical discussion on 3D TV-sets on the first outdoor meetup of the year.
The movie we saw was Monsters vs. Aliens in 3-D from DreamWorks in Ringes Park. It’s important to mention the 3-D part because it almost is a character in the movie. At the very start of the movie you are greeted with a fly-by shot from a distant planet towards Earth, going through Saturn and its rings, which makes the extra 20 kr worth. I did feel that they used the 3-D less and less as the movie went on though.
Monsters vs. Aliens is fun overall. The team from DreamWorks know how to make funny movies (Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar), but as always they’re not able to pull a Pixar. What the movie lacks in storyline it makes up in very funny moments. It has very good voices, best of all are: Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) as blob of goo called BOB and Hugh Laurie (House) as crazy cockroach scientist. The movie is shock-full of old horror-film references, many of which went over my head but I did hear Adam laughing at moments where everyone else was quiet. One thing to note, while there are a couple of monsters in the movie, there’s no Aliens, just one Alien.
Bottom line, funny movie, that looked great on 3-D and even better on the Ringes Park digital screen. I recommend it.

An early show at SMEx XL. We wanted see the original version that started at 6 PM in the evening. Beer and food had to wait until after the show.
This was SMEx’ first animated movie (Beowulf was something in between).
The movie starts on Earth in about a thousand years in the future. Every human flead the planet many hundred years ago because mankind managed to ruin the environment. Before the planet was abandoned, the humans manufactured an army of robots, WALL-E, whose sole purpose were to move around on the surface and clean up the mess while the humans rested comfortably somewhere else in the universe.
The humans want to return to Earth from their microgravity vacation and send probes to the planet once in a while. And one day it finally seems the world is ready allthough they do not know that only one robot of the army has survived.
This is a really funny movie. It is enjoyable in a smart way. Sometimes you have to figure out the gags yourself as they are not presented directly to the spectator. Other scenes are more in-the-face. This makes the movie enjoyable for both young and old.
I wonder how much Apple Inc. paid for this one.
Hoff says: “Sorry I've been on vacation for 700 years but now I'm back!”
