After a steaming hot weekend of Pentecost, we met up at “Gamle Major” for a cold beverage before the movie.
I’ve been looking forward to this film for weeks, as I’m a true Will Smith fan. Well, I know he’s not the world’s greatest actor, but he makes me laugh. I actually thought the cinema would be completely full for this movie, but there were quite a few empty seats. I guess the others MIB-lovers left the city to enjoy the heat by the sea. Not often we see the sun here up north.
I had quite high expectations for this movie. Not hoping for an Oscar-winning movie, but looking forward to some good jokes both from Will and his alien friends.
This third MiB has a time travelling plot that takes place in New York 2012 and in 1969. The alien “Boris the Beast” escapes from the Supermax prison on the Moon and travels back in time to kill Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) before he gets the opportunity to arrest Boris and shoot his arm off. Agent J (Will Smith) then has to follow Boris back to 1969 to restore history by stopping Boris from killing Agent K and saving the world from a Boglodite-invasion.
It is a classic sci-fi action-comedy filled with lots of funny quotes. I was kind of skeptical about another actor playing the young Agent K (Josh Brolin), but he did a great job. So did the designers of the sets and props as well, which makes it obvious why it was so expensive to make compared to the other previous movies. And finally, what is a MiB without some good celebrity alien revelations.
On the other hand, maybe I had too high expectations because I hoped it was funnier than it was. It was too serious at times and I missed some kind of funny alien helper, like the Frank the dog or the twister-playing worm aliens. Griffin was no way near as funny and neither was Agent O (Emma Thompson).
All in all, it is good and easy entertainment. If you liked the other two MIBs, then you will probably like this as well. Even though you don’t necessarily have to have seen the others before seeing this one, but it helps. So if you are looking for brainless comedy, this is the one to watch. I’ll give it 7 stars.
Men in Black 3D, 7.0 out of 10 based on 6 ratings
I read a review from some guy on an Australian website and I think I have to agree with him. The start of this movie was terrible, it seemed like they tried to make it funny but just failed, but once they go back in time the whole thing flips around and is actually quite funny and entraining.
Maybe they should follow this idea in more movies start terrible then make it good, it makes it better in the end
Cool actors, crap aliens… Expected a bit more, but still OK!
