The situation with this film is simple and the diagnosis is obvious. The name of the diagnosis – Sacha Baron Cohen.
If you like this artist’s work (“Borat,” “Bruno”) – feel free to go, watch and get your share of fun. If you find the above-mentioned movies stupid and vulgar, then the “Dictator” will not change your opinion dramatically. For those who are still not familiar with Cohen’s creativity, I’ll try to describe this cultural phenomenon in a few words.
Sacha Baron Cohen – is a big hairy baby with no brakes, unaware of the existence of decency and morality, but not without talents. Hobbies – laughing, joking and shocking the audience.
There are many people and things it is made fun of in the “Dictator”: the Chinese, Arabs, Jews, Americans, dictatorship, democracy, terrorist threats, the fashion for tolerance, the media, Hollywood, political technologies, etc. etc.
If we talk about the story (which exists in contrast to previous movies), the focus is on the ruler of a fictional but recognizable North African country, model dictator Admiral General Aladeen. His country is rich in oil, Aladeen does not indulge in anything, travels in a cortège of golden hammers and builds an atomic bomb. On the subject of the bomb the world community politely (under threat of invasion and a missile attack) invited him to the United States for an explanation to the UN.
However it didn’t come up to the explanation. The arrival Aladeen was kidnapped and substituted by a double. And then – a miraculous escape, wandering in a strange city with an unfamiliar culture, meeting with a militant female wrestler for rights of everyone and everything and trying to regain the good name of the dictator…
In short, story is present. Its main task – to serve as a frame for Sacha-styled jokes, gags, sketches and other humor, which in fact is the main asset of this film.Actor’s work is nothing outstanding. Sacha plays his character, others do their best in his shadow.
Humor of this movie is a matter of taste. I’m sure many will say “Ugh, how disgusting!”, others will consider the “Dictator” as a funniest film of the year.
I’m somewhere in the neutral zone. 6 points.
The Dictator, 6.1 out of 10 based on 8 ratings
This movie was better than Borat or Bruno as it pushed the boundaries without going too far. Even so it was a bit slow at the start but it ended ok.
I liked the movie pretty much. Very much entertaining and relaxing for the brains.
